Ford 6610 1000 pto

Anyone know if I can swap out a 540 shaft for a 1000 shaft? The tractor is a 6610 with the 8x4 transmission

Assuming it was originally equipped with only 540 PTO, the answer is no. If it came with the optional 2-speed PTO, the answer
is yes. Simply remove the snap ring holding the 540 shaft in place and insert the 1000 shaft.

How hard would it be to add 2 speed pto. Is it just replacing a gear in the rear end or is it more than that?

That would be a no go. The rear axle housing is completely different in the area of the PTO gearing - you'd have to replace
the entire rear axle housing.
