    PTO housing help

Same for me, I was praying as I tightened the bolts up that it wouldn't leak!

    PTO housing help

Final update for the records - the diameter of the swelled area on the pto assembly was just a smidge to large to go through the opening in the differential housing - it is amazing how very little difference there is between go and no-go! I measured all the diameters between the old pto and...

    PTO housing help

I got the assembly with the tractor from the seller, along with a bunch of other new parts he "intended" to install. I have no idea where it came from.

    PTO housing help

This is exactly where mine is hanging up. Your area the arrow is pointing to is about 1/2" or so in width that is a larger diameter, mine is about 3" in this area. That is a lot of filing down. I don't mind doing it if needed, I just want to make sure this assembly isn't for some other make of...

    PTO housing help

Working on a 1950 8N for a buddy and discovered the hydraulic and differential housing was swapped out some time in the past with a 9N or 2N model (luckily the rear axle housings were still the 1950 version with the inner oil seal). Anyway, it has an original small 1 1/8" pto shaft but the...

    I Defected

I too broke down and have an orange tractor - but mine is a Kioti with cab, air, and a front end loader I put a grapple on. I still have my 1939 9N, 1948 8N, 1954 NAA, and 1963 3000 and I still use them (mostly for mowing duty). But as I got older I got real tired of picking up tree branches and...

    8N axle seals

Not sure I know exactly what you mean, but when it comes to the OUTER seal you have two options - replace the retainer as an assembly that comes with the retainer, seal, inner seal gasket (inside the retainer), and outer retainer paper gasket in between the retainer and brake plate. Or, buy each...

    8N axle seals

Just did this for my friends tractor. If possible, take apart both sides before ordering in case you need bearings or races, etc. At a minimum, you need the inner seal and I usually use the outer seal retainer that comes with the seal and gasket. You will need the "cork" seal and the outer...

    8N Starter Button Malfunction

Came out easy?!?! Some people have all the luck! Mine was as worn down as yours (original pin) and would not budge! I had to drill all the way through (by hand and still stayed 100% inside the pin) and a BFH to get mine out. Good for another 75 years or more

    8N Starter Button Malfunction

Isn't that the truth. I also had to replace the shifter pin when I pulled my friends cover last week. Now that was a "fun" project.

    8N Starter Button Malfunction

The bolt on the top center in front of the shifter and starter button is tough to get at, I have to use an open end wrench and come straight down on the bolt. You will see what I mean. Be careful of the detent spring under the back of the cover as has been mentioned. Go ahead and replace the...

    8N Governor issue?

Make sure the two linkages to the governor are installed correctly. The linkage from the hand throttle control is attached to the outside governor arm, away from the engine, and the linkage to the carb goes on the arm closest to the engine. If these are reversed it will still work but very...

    8N Starter Button Malfunction

You have to remove the shifter cover to access the lock nut holding it in place. Don't forget to replace the small gasket between the button and shifter plate when you replace it.

    1948 8N rebuild progress

Those are usually caused by water in the oil sitting in between the bearing rollers and the race for an extended amount of time while the tractor sits for a long time unused. Oddly enough the bearing rollers rarely get the same damage as the race and you can get by just replacing the race.

    Does This Sound Familiar?

I would suspect brake pads. They could be sticking in the up position - how is the level of the brake pedal in relation to the other one before you back up? After the clunk does the pedal come up some? To check your hubs, stand next to your rear wheel and grab the top of the tire. Rock in...

    Ford 8n Freeze Engine Plugs

I had a rubber one on my first N Series tractor. It wasn't leaking, but sure was ugly. The standard ones are easy to replace with the right sized ball peen hammer - one wack usually does it. Make sure to clean around the casting good to get all dirt and rust off and use a little permatex sealant...

    8n head removal.

It is easier with the studs out. Try using two nuts on the stud, tighten them tightly together and see if that gives you enough pressure to unscrew the studs. They make a stud remover, but it messes the threads up and will snap the studs in the block if they are stuck tight. Take a deadblow...

Pickle fork is what you need to pop off the drag links.

    Replace clutch assembly on 8n

Sounds like you might have put the clutch fork on backwards, it is an easy mistake to make. Don't ask me how I know...

    1948 8N steering

I put 00 grease in my 48 when I rebuiltthe steering box, as well as TWO oil seals on each side as the new ones are much thinner, and I still have grease oozing out of the side arms. Sometimes it is not the fix all unfortunately
